Why do doctors and scientists wear white coats?

I mean, why, stereotypically, do you see people who study in the field of medicine always wearing white lab coats?
Why white? What is the significance of a long coat?
White is more of a calming color, so it can calm the patients down, and it a simple color. Also, it goes with the hospital white that is always on the wall. I had one but I spilt strawberry shortcake on it (by accident). not cool.
